Xia Shuren was the former Party secretary of Beijing Construction Engineering Group’s Libyan project.

His story is about a homecoming trip of more than 10,000 kilometers for 2,800 workers from war-torn Libya to China.

A riot broke out in the Libyan city of Benghazi on Feb.17, 2011 and a war was at risk of breaking out at any time. Over 2,800 Beijing Construction Engineering Group workers were trapped in the Libyan desert with gunshots, fires and robberies all around them. Communications were cut off and the situation was desperate.

With the assistance of the Chinese Embassy in Libya, the workers were rushed to Tunisia along the coastal road aboard more than 180 passenger vehicles. They passed through 51 checkpoints armed with tanks and submachine guns on the way and the five-starred red flag stuck on the windows of the vehicles was their promise of hope.

It was already late night when the workers arrived in Tunisia. At the request of the Chinese Embassy there, the local customs opened “green passages” for the workers. They finally felt reassured when they were provided with board and lodging in star-rated hotels. From Tunisia they returned to China safely on board Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines flights.
