I am an airport border control officer. In 2012, I became a mother, but working and resting irregular hours has made constant breast-feeding impossible and this has proved an unhealthy way for a baby’s growth. Under such circumstances, I made a tough decision to stop breast-feeding early and place the baby in the care of family members at my hometown away from Beijing.

When I went to visit the child two months later, he cried bitterly instead of running into my arms. Obviously he has forgotten who I am. At that moment, my heart stung. I came up to him and held him tightly, saying repeatedly that “I’m your mother.” Seeing the fear on his face, I choked with sobs while kneeling on the ground.

Hearing my story, my colleague said to me in a very cool manner: “You will slowly get use to it. My own child has grown up without my even noticing it.”

From the moment we put on the policeman uniform, we are bound to choose job responsibility over family affection. Female border control officers, with their selfless dedication for several decades, have help up half the sky in the service of border control.
