Adjust font size:

A Chinese company has won a 28.4 million U.S. dollars contract to modernize the power supply system in Angola's capital Luanda, an official said on Wednesday.

The contract signed between the China Machine-Building International Company and the Luanda Electricity Supply Company has been approved by the Angolan government, the official said on condition of anonymity.

He said the Phase-III Project of Rehabilitation and Expansion of the Luanda Electric Network is aimed at improving and expanding power supply capacity in the capital city's central and southern areas.

He added that the project includes the repairing of the medium- and low-tension networks and erecting power transmission lines in Tourada and Morro Bento areas.

The official said the project also includes erecting power supply lines connecting with residential houses and construction of two power transformer substations at Ngola Kiluange and Maianga. When completed and put into operation in the end of 2010, power supply in the capital's central and southern areas will be greatly improved, said the official.

Power cut is frequently occurred in Angola, even in the capital city of Luanda due to the 27-year civil war which destroyed almost all infrastructural facilities in addition to one million people dead and four million people displaced.
