Xinhua News Agency launched an Internet search engine jointly with China Mobile on Tuesday.

The search engine, www.panguso.com, will combine the strengths of Xinhua, a leading news agency and content provider, and China Mobile which has the latest network technologies, said Panguso, a joint venture of Xinhua and China Mobile, in a press release.

Panguso has designed an accurate search service for news, websites, images, videos and audio data, it said.

It will also expand the search service to cell phones. Users can send search results from computers to cell phones by SMS.

"The operation of Panguso is an important move by Xinhua and China Mobile to extend our cooperation in cyberspace," said Li Congjun, president of Xinhua News Agency, at the opening ceremony.

The search engine is expected to contribute to the development of new media in China and better serve Chinese netizens, Li said.

"We would like to fully exploit the advantage of Xinhua as an official agency having a large amount of news and information, and that of China Mobile in terms of technology, advanced operation principles and strong infrastructure," he said.

He expected Panguso to become a top search engine in China and a leading one in the international market.

China now has 457 million Internet users and the search engines have become an indispensable service.

"Although the online search market is highly competitive and several domestic and foreign players have taken their share, the market still has huge potential," said Wang Jianzhou, chairman of China Mobile, at the same ceremony.

Besides Xinhua's capacity of collecting information, Panguso can take advantage of China Mobile's position in the cell phone market and the company's research and development of online search technologies based on cloud computing, he said.

"China Mobile would like to create a brand new search engine that meets the demand of the market and consumers and links the Internet with cell phones," he said.
