Qian Xiaoqian, vice director of State Council Information Office, said at the ceremony that Panguso should prioritize its social responsibility as its two investors have always done.

It should provide quality and healthy products for Chinese netizens and work to limit the spread of illegal information such as pornography and violence, he said.

Currently Panguso will focus on news searches, which Xinhua can provide the best service, while it will extend searches to a wider range of information in the future, said Zhou Xisheng, Xinhua vice president and chairman of Xinhua Network Co. Ltd.

Xinhua will allow the search engine to make full use of its news archives, he said.

"This is another important step Xinhua has made in transforming itself from a traditional media to a multimedia organization," he said.

In January, the news agency unveiled its first research center -- Xinhuanet Industrial Park -- to develop new media products at China New Media Development Zone in southern Beijing.
