China Unicom unveils Wophone handsets

China Unicom launched its first Wophone handsets on Tuesday, manufactured by Tianyu Communication Equipment Co. and Inventec Corp, the 21st Century Business Herald reported.
China Unicom launched its Wophone OS, the first domestically made smart phone operating system, in February after three years of development. The company said it hopes to build more partnerships to promote and improve the Linux-based software platform.
China Unicom will subsidize mobile phone manufacturers for Wophone handset sales promotion.
"Currently, Wophone mobile phones target the low- and middle-end markets, but we will also launch high-end and tablet mobile devices designed for the Wophone OS in the future," said Yu Yingtao, head of China Unicom's marketing and sales department.
ZTE, Huawei, TCL and Coolpad will develop four Wophone handsets in the second half this year, said Zhang Zhijiang, head of China Unicom's technology department.
Because the Wophone OS is not based on Android, the company does not expect it will run into patent disputes, Yu said.
