With Alibaba's IPO preparation claiming much media attention, its boss, Ma Yun (Jack), naturally becomes the center of attention, along with the boasts he has made over the years and how accurate they have proven.
Many years ago, Ma made ambitious remarks that some people took as jokes or as self-puffery that would not be achieved. Reflecting on those moments, Ma reiterated that he should thank the company's entire staff who, through their efforts, helped those boasts to become reality. "Others only see our high-profile actions, but few understand our years' of perseverance and persistence," he said.
The following lists Ma's most famous boasts that have been fulfilled.
1. "We are building an international company operated by Chinese."
Ma made this promise in 1999, soon after establishing Alibaba, when he reassured his initial staff members who seemed uncertain about the company's future. Reportedly, Ma reiterated this ambition many times later.
In 2014, on the eve of Alibaba's U.S. IPO, the Wall Street Journal reported that the company will likely raise US$24 billion. This figure will dwarf China Agricultural Bank, whose IPO in 2010 amassed US$22 billion, a historical high then. If achieved, Alibaba will become one of the world's top three most valuable Internet companies.
