When Ma announced this ambition in 1999, he faced many doubters, because e-commerce was still in its infancy. Being one of the world's most visited website seemed too good to be true.

However, years on, Alibaba's prospectus shows the group operates the world's largest e-commerce website, including a mobile website. In 2013 alone, Alibaba's online platform produced gross transaction revenue exceeding 1.5 trillion yuan, becoming the world's No. 1.
