Police warn of more clashes as G20 summit begins
Adjust font size:

Police are preparing for more violence on the second day of protests as world leaders gather for the G20 summit at the ExCel Centre in London on Thursday.

Some demonstrators are converging on the London Stock Exchange but the main focus will move to the ExCel Centre, where anti-war protests are planned from 1100 BST (1200 GMT).

The Metropolitan Police, responsible for G20 security, have warned that there may be more clashes between officers and demonstrators after Wednesday's lengthy violent protests took place in London's financial district and eventually led to a man's death.

Up to 4,700 police officers will be on duty on Thursday in the British capital.

Earlier on Thursday, police confirmed that they made 86 arrests ahead of the summit for a range of offences, including violent disorder, aggravated burglary, arson, bomb threats and possession of ammunition.

Police also revealed that a man taking part in Wednesday's demonstration was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital after collapsing at a protest camp near the Bank of England in central London.

Thousands of people had gathered outside the bank, the Royal Exchange and the Royal Bank of Scotland in the financial center of London and set up camp to express their anger at the "irresponsible," "reckless" fat-cat bankers who pocket fat bonuses even as the banks are in difficulty.
