The speculation ends - Shanghai Disney ready to roll

Major Events: a review

October 1998: Disney announces plans to build Asia's second theme park on the Chinese mainland. Shanghai intends to bid, but the project goes to Hong Kong.

  • December 2005: Rumors start again about a Shanghai Disneyland project.
  • February 6, 2006: Robert Iger, then president and CEO of Walt Disney Company, confirms the company is negotiating with the local government to build a theme park in Shanghai.
  • September 2006: Shanghai Disneyland project set aside due to the social security scandal involving the former Party chief of Shanghai.
  • March 2008: Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng announces to the public that the Disney project has been submitted to central government.
  • November 2008: Shanghai Securities News says the Shanghai Disneyland project is settled.
  • January 8, 2009: Shanghai Securities News reports again that Shanghai local government and Disney Corporation have reached an agreement on major issues.
