Chinese shares rise ahead of economic data release

Chinese shares edged up 0.71 percent Tuesday ahead of the release of last month's economic data.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.71 percent, or 19.55 points, to close at 2,787.89. The Shenzhen Component Index was up 1.21 percent, or 128.34 points, to 10,740.09.

Combined turnover shrank to 206.28 billion yuan (US$30.2 billion) from 210 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers led losers by 448 to 421 in Shanghai and 418 to 340 in Shenzhen.
