A man who wounded a mother with a knife and abducted her daughter Monday morning was shot dead by the police in Chongqing Municipality, said the local police.

Both the mother and the daughter had been hospitalized. The mother suffered multiple wounds and is in a critical condition; the daughter was in a state of near collapse after being taken hostage for more than two hours, said sources with the Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

The young man wounded the woman with a knife at around 8 a.m. and kidnapped her daughter to Jingkou Town, Shapingba District.

Police shot the guy after over two-hour negotiation failed, and freed the hostage at around 10: 45 a.m., police said.

Police is investigating the identity of the kidnapper and the motive of the crime.
