Fifty six giant columns, which were erected at the Tian'anmen Square for the celebration of the 60th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China, were removed from the Square Thursday.
The columns, which symbolize the unity of China's 56 ethnic groups, will be relocated after maintenance, the press office of the Beijing municipal government said.
Workers began to remove the 13.6-meter-tall columns, which stood along two sides of the Tian'anmen Square, at about 8 p.m. Wednesday and finished the removal early Thursday morning. The columns were well wrapped up for transportation.
Early reports said the columns would be moved to the Beijing Olympic Green.
However, the press office said the location has not been decided yet.
