Human rights experts have said that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have grown rapidly in China and played an active role in promoting public welfare since 1978.
By the end of 2008, there had been 1,597 foundations, and 414,000 social organizations in the country, said Huang Mengfu, chairman of China Foundation For Human Rights Development, at a forum of the world's major foundations Wednesday in Beijing.
NGOs have thrived in China since the launching of reform and opening-up policy in 1978 and they are now seen in the fields of education, science and technology, culture, heath, environmental protection, charity and others.
Huang said NGOs have played important roles in promoting social welfare and serving public interests.
Wang Chen, director of the Information Office of the State Council, said at the forum that China's NGOs have not only played an important role domestically, but also participated in international affairs with greater capacity.
The two-day forum is hosted by China Foundation For Human Rights Development and attended by representatives from 26 major foundations across the world.
