Officials in China's Henan Province on Tuesday apologized to a man who had been jailed for 11 years after being wrongfully convicted of murder.

Officials from the anti-graft authorities, the court, procuratorate and public security bureau of Shangqiu city visited Zhao Zuohai, who was freed Sunday after his alleged victim turned up alive.

"I apologize to you on behalf of the authorities of Shangqiu," said Wang Jianmin, head of the political science and law committee of the Shangqiu City Committee of the Communist Party of China.

"The case was wrongly handled, and we are correcting it," Wang told Zhao, holding his hands.

Wang gave Zhao 10,000 yuan (1,464 U.S. dollars) in compensation on behalf of the government and Zhao bowed to Wang.

Zhao, 57, appeared tired after giving numerous interviews since he was freed.

The local government was helping Zhao to resume his life and investigating the miscarriage of justice.

Last week, the Higher People's Court of Henan pronounced Zhao innocent, after the man he was accused of killing, Zhao Zhenshang, returned to their village on April 30.

Police are trying to identify the headless corpse, which had been believed to be Zhao Zhenshang's.

An investigation was underway into the conviction, and Zhao Zuohai is expected to receive further compensation according to the state compensation law.
