Jinan, capital city of east China's Shangdong Province, has shelled out 700,000 Yuan, or over 100,000 US dollars, for a luxurious toilet in its suburbs, arousing a great deal of concern among local residents, the China News Agency reported Sunday.

Jinan's luxurious toilet complex covers an area of 200 square meters. From the outside, one is struck by the beautifully glazed doors and windows, as well as the faint whisper of music drifting on the air. Once inside, the sumptuous decorations are enough to astound even the most discerning toilet user. Besides essentials such as automatic hand dryers and liquid soap dispensers, one can also enjoy a brand-name quartz clock and an LCD TV hanging on the wall. Four fashionable droplights hang down from the ceiling.

There is also a sumptuous restroom. Resembling a lounge, the floor is made of top quality wood and there are water machines, a wooden sofa, a tea table and an ashtray to complete the image. An air conditioner costing upwards of 8,000 Yuan stands in the corner.

Some local residents said they were fascinated that the toilet was so clean and exquisite, but wondered whether it was the best use of 700,000 Yuan. Some argued that the money would be better spent on "green projects to improve people's livelihoods".
