Rescuers are still searching for the missing person near a port in Fangchenggang City, which has received 117 millimeters of rain since 10 p.m. Monday, said sources from the city government.

Flooding caused by the heavy rain has trapped 850 students in a five-storey school building of Laibin City Experimental Middle School in Guangxi, said Wei Wei, an official with Laibin City Education Bureau.

By 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, flood waters -- 1.5 meters deep -- had submerged most of the first floor of the building. The students were trapped upstairs, Wei said.

Rescuers had used lifeboats to get food and water to the students. They would get the students out as soon as they could ensure a safe rescue, he said. Rescuers were waiting for more lifeboats to arrive.

The meteorological station in Guangxi issued a red alert Tuesday due to the continuing severity of the rain storm.

It said 11 townships in Guangxi have received more than 300 millimeters of rain, with several suffering from flooding. The rain is forecast to last until Wednesday.
