A big family

The 13 kids, ranging from 9 to 13, come from different ethnic groups and regions in Xinjiang. How to combine them into one group was a big concern of the tutors in the delegation.

"Before starting out for Beijing, I worried that the differences in living styles and customs might cause conflict among the children," said Li Fanqi, deputy head of the Xinjiang CYP working commission.

But within a few days of meeting, the children became good enough friends to call each other by their nicknames. They managed their daily life by themselves, attending the congress, taking notes of the speeches, discussing, playing, and taking care of companions who felt under the weather. "During the whole trip, we have not seen a single quarrel or incident on the Xinjiang delegation. As one of their tutors, I feel proud of them," said Li.

"When they are wearing their traditional folk costumes, they represent their own peoples; but when they are not, they look like brothers and sisters in one big family."
