Eight residential buildings were wrecked after a riverbank collapsed in Fengkai County of southern China's Guangdong Province Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson with the local government said Wednesday.

No casualties have been reported.

At around 8 a.m. Tuesday, signs of an impending landslide were detected when cracks were found in residential buildings located on a riverbank in Jiangkou Town. An evacuation of the people inside started immediately. The number of people inside at the time is not known.

The bank of the river collapsed at 4 p.m., only 30 minutes after the evacuation was completed, destroying eight buildings -- with parts of the structures breaking off into the river.

Residents at another 37 apartment buildings nearby were also evacuated. Total evacuees numbered 247, who were from 44 households.

On Wednesday morning, the county government had blocked the public from entering the affected area.

The cause of the landslide is being investigated.
