Seven people were dead and 14 others injured after criminal suspects detonated explosives in a crowd in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Thursday, local authorities said.

The blast occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on a bridge on the outskirts of Aksu City in southern Xinjiang, said a municipal government spokesperson at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

The suspects drove an electric tricycle and threw the explosives from it. The blast killed five at the scene and two others died later in the hospital, the spokesperson said.

Witnesses said the suspects were a man and a woman. The female suspect died in the blast. The male suspect had been seized by police at the site.

Local authorities were going all out to treat the injured, the spokesperson said.
