A former primary school employee who stabbed two to death and wounded 14 others in downtown Beijing September last year was sentenced to death Tuesday.
In its verdict, Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court said Zhang Jianfei, 48, had severely threatened public security. He was also charged 1.05 million yuan (about 160,000 U.S. dollars) as compensation for the victims.
Zhang, a native of Jilin City of northeastern Jilin Province, went on the killing rampage on Sept. 17, 2009, on Dashilan, the shopping street near Qianmen, Beijing. He stabbed people randomly with a knife.
Two security guards died after being rushed to the hospital and 14 others were wounded, including six seriously.
Zhang was apprehended at the scene.
