Lawyer Zhang Kai checks damage to his car, which he said was attacked on Tuesday night.

Zhang Kai, a lawyer with the Beijing Yijia Law Firm, said in his blog on Wednesday that more than 10 people in three cars forced his car to stop and attempted to pull him out.

The men punched and kicked his car's windows and damaged the side-view mirrors, he added. Two of the three cars did not have license plates.

Zhang said he managed to escape the assault after seeing a man approaching with what look like a stick or bar. He drove away and was closely followed until he stopped beside a police car.

Neither he nor his passenger was injured, Zhang said. He has reported the attack to police.

Zhang said on his blog that he was not sure of the reason.

But he told Beijing Youth Daily that the members of the gang who attacked him were "no ordinary people" because of their ability to locate his position.

Zhang's clients have included the family of Chen Xiaofeng, a Hebei University student killed in October after a car driven by a local official's son struck her on campus. The accident was dubbed the "My father is Li Gang" case online and caused outcry as the perpetrator threatened to use his father's power to settle the case.

As some netizens suspected the attack was related to the case, other anonymous netizens thought the attack might not have any connection to that case because Chen's family had canceled its contract with Zhang.

Zhang admitted he was not sure whether the attack is related to the campus traffic accident or other incidents.

Beijing police said the case is under investigation.
