Woman jailed for planting poppy

A court has sentenced a woman surnamed Zhou from Shangrao, Jiangxi Province, to eight months in prison for planting narcotic drugs, China News Service reports.

Police found 1,409 poppy plants in Zhou’s backyard in May. Zhou, who was also fined 5,000 yuan, said she had heard opium could heal her stomach illness.
