5.1 magnitude earthquake hits Xinjiang

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale hit Wuqia County in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at 9:56 a.m. Saturday, according to the Xinjiang Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter was calculated to be in the county's Bortokoye Township, which is 37 kilometers from the county seat.

The epicenter's coordinates are 39.4 degrees north latitude and 75.2 degrees east longitude. The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The tremor was felt in neighboring townships.

There have been no reports of casualties so far, said Li Youlin, secretary of the Bortokoye Township branch of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The epicenter was in a mountainous area across which villages are scattered.

Investigations are ongoing, Li said, adding that the quake is unlikely to have caused severe damage.
