Police officers and residents in Tai'an city, Shandong province, on Wednesday bow to salute the police officers who died chasing the two gunmen on Tuesday.

The two men, 52-year-old Liu Luming and 50-year-old Liu Jianjun, fired at policemen who were entering an apartment during a murder investigation in Tai'an City Tuesday noon, said Xu Zhigang, deputy director of Tai'an's public security bureau during a Wednesday press conference.

The apartment belongs to Liu Jianjun, brother of Liu Luming who was a suspect from a murder case in another city in the province, he said.

After gunning down the officers, the two men fled the scene, hijacking four cars and shooting two drivers before their car was hit by a patrol car.

The brothers, armed with a homemade pistol and a double-barreled shotgun, continued to fire after police cornered them, wounding more police officers.

Liu Luming then shot and killed himself while his younger brother was taken into custody.

The brothers were both unemployed. Liu Luming was in detention for five days for theft in 2008. Liu Jianjun served terms in prison twice between 1985 and 2000, one for theft and the other for intentional injury.
