Seven people were killed and eight more injured in a pileup Thursday in south China's Guangdong Province, local officials said.

The road accident happened at about 2:14 p.m. in Shijiao Township of Lianjiang City, the municipal publicity department said in a statement.

According to the statement, a heavy-duty truck bound for Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangdong's neighbor, lost control, and hit seven motorcycles, a medium-sized bus and a van on the road before crashing into a nearby house.

The injured were rushed to an area hospital for treatment and are now in stable condition.

Currently, the police are investigating the cause of the accident and are searching for the truck driver who fled the scene.

Liangjiang, situated in the southwestern part of Guangdong, is a county-level city administered by Zhanjiang, another larger port city in Guangdong.
