A total of 1,772 local citizens get their flu shots over the weekend after Health Bureau of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) announced free vaccination for all Macao ID holders, the Macao Post Daily reported on Monday.

The newspaper quoted a statement by the Bureau as saying that about 70,000 locals have been vaccinated as of last Sunday.

The Bureau decided to launch free shots to all residents as more and more severe or serious flu cases was reported on youths and others normally not regarded as being among high-risk groups.

Macao SAR government has stocked up to 90,000 doses of seasonal flu vaccine for the 2010 and 2011 flu season.

According to the Bureau, the flu vaccines, supplied by a British company, have only minor side effects, but are effective in preventing flu-associated serious illnesses.
