A company in Guangdong Province announced at a job fair in Guangzhou, the capital of the province, that it offers nine days extra holiday for female workers, Guangzhou Daily reported Tuesday.

The nine days include six days for Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) every year, four half-days for Mothers' Day, Children's Day, wedding anniversaries, and birthdays (half a day for each) and one day for International Women's Day.

"Female employees only have to apply for the holiday one day ahead," the company's owner said, calling on more companies to care for women.

"It's the first time I've heard about holiday for PMS, but it is necessary care for us," a job candidate surnamed Zhu told a reporter.

Zhang Xiaomei, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), proposed at the "two sessions" in 2008 that women should have paid holidays while menstruating. She told the reporter that she felt gratified to see such company's benefit.

"Caring for female workers is much more important than houses or commodity prices. It is practical to take the details into consideration," Zhang said.

According to a sample survey of female employees in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, over 85 percent women say that PMS and it adversely impacts their work and life. Another investigation launched by All-China Women's Federation shows that 78.5 percent women has no special protection at work during their period.
