WEAK ROLE OF COMPREHENSIVE HOSPITALS
Compared with the frantic scene in BCH, few people visit the pediatric departments in other non-pediatric hospitals.
While pediatricians in BCH and CIP were up to their ears in patients, Beijing Municipal Health Bureau statistics show that on the same day, three pediatricians of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine received 12 visitors and five pediatricians in Beijing Ditan Hospital saw only 10 patients.
As pediatrics departments bring few profits to comprehensive hospitals where the government has allocated almost no money for departments of pediatrics in recent years, hospitals are unwilling to buy expensive equipment for pediatric examinations, Liu said, who insisted this produced another kind of waste of pediatrician resources.
Many parents like Chang and wu were aware of the failure of comprehensive hospitals in treating sick children and turned to specialized hospitals.
Zhu Zonghan also blamed the insufficient government investment in pediatrics while complaining pediatric diseases were scarcely listed as national major scientific research item.
He said China pumped so much into subway building but tightened up its money for progress of pediatrics.
"The development of pediatrics should be included in China's 12th Five-Year Program," said Zhu, adding more pediatric hospitals should be built while the role of comprehensive hospitals in treating sick children should be enhanced.
