Headquarters of special police in Beijing open to public

Thousands of citizens including college students were invited Wednesday to visit the headquarters of Beijing's special police to familiarize themselves with the work and life of these mysterious men.
A row of vehicles designed for special tasks were displayed at the headquarters in the northern suburb of the Chinese capital, where more than 5,000 visitors were allowed to check out the inside of the vehicles.
Other equipment such as an X-ray machine that can detect items behind an eight-centimeter wall and a robot that can search for things 200 meters below water surface captured visitors' wonderment.
Pistols, automatic rifles as well as submachine guns of the special forces were also on display for visitors.
"What we displayed today are the most advanced outfits and equipment in China used in our real missions," said Liu Gensheng, deputy commander of the special police under the Beijing Public Security Bureau.
"We hope to give people a better understanding of the special police by opening our doors to the public," Liu said.
Members of the special police also challenged the visitors with training skills such as holding a gun while standing on two inflated balls.
Similar activities were organized Wednesday in the cities of Changsha and Shenyang as March is designated as the Month of Opening Barracks for Public nationwide.
"The visit has assured me that our lives in Beijing are well safeguarded," said Xing Xing, a Beijing citizen.
