Taiwan's epidemic prevention authorities confirmed on Wednesday that 999 pigs that were infected by foot-and-mouth disease have been culled and slaughtered on Penghu Island. About 3,000 more pigs in the county have been quarantined.
This has been the most serious foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the past three years on Penghu Island. The area is much closer to the Chinese mainland than Taiwan Island. So far, no infected pigs have been found in the market.
Penghu County has four pig farms with 4,000 animals. Currently, no pork or live pigs are allowed in or out of Penghu to prevent the further spread of the disease. Epidemic prevention officers in Penghu will examine cows, sheep and other livestock for infection while officers on Taiwan Island conduct mass screening of all livestock.
Last year, nearly 200 infected pigs were culled in Taiwan, including on Penghu Island, to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Taiwan' s cloven hooves production has been restricted for export since 1997 when a massive foot-and-mouth epidemic ravaged the region.
