Five hundred forced Chinese laborers have demanded an apology and compensation from Mitsubishi Materials Corporation for its mistreatment of them during World War II.

They declared their demand at a press conference held Friday by the Federation for Forced Chinese Laborers and their attorneys.

The Japanese company forced 2,709 Chinese laborers to work in nine coal mines without paying any wages in extremely dangerous and inhumane conditions during World War II, according to the federation.

The laborers have asked for 351 million yuan ($54 million) in compensation.

"We were once treated inhumanely and worked for no wage. Now we just want what we should have," Liu Shili, 86, from Tangshan, Hebei Province, told the Global Times on Friday.

Three Japanese lawyers were also present at the press conference as attorneys for the laborers.

"We are prepared to propose a unified demand," Saikawa Osamu, one of the lawyers, said to the Global Times on Friday.
