Qiu Xin, the spokesman of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC)'s Shanghai Municipal Committee, met with the press from China and overseas for the first time on Wednesday.
Qiu is the first spokesman of the Shanghai Party's committee and he is also the deputy director of Shanghai’s information office.
The 46-year-old spokesman was previously a senior journalist for the Shanghai-based Jiefang Daily.
In September 2009, the CPC Central Committee proposed setting up a spokesman system in a bid to make Party affairs public, promote intra-party democracy, improve the party's ability to govern, and cultivate a favorable environment for the development of the CPC and the nation.
Last June, 11 departments of the CPC Central Committee named their spokesmen. This year, the system has become even more widespread, with the Party committees in the provinces of Hunan, Hainan, Jiangsu, Yunnan, Guizhou and Fujian and the municipalities of Beijing and Chongqing naming their spokesmen respectively.
Next month will mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, which now has nearly 80 million members.
