Authorities in Nanjing have issued a document calling on local officials to strengthen the city government's presence on microblogging sites, the Modern Express reported.

The memo says the government should release important news affecting local residents' daily lives – especially regarding a disaster or sudden event – on microblogs within an hour of the event or as soon as they get information.

If the event develops further complications, the service should be used to provide timely updates on current conditions. Information on underlying causes or government responses can be delayed or disposed of in a careful and moderate way, the document advises.
