Chinese legislators delivered a report Wednesday to a bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, which unveiled several major issues with food safety in China, Xinhua reported.

Lu Yongxiang, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said that there was a lack of understanding of food safety laws. He also said some food manufacturers continue to act in an underhanded and dishonest manner. Also, some local government agencies had failed to fulfill their duties to fight illegal practices in the food sector, he added.

According to the report, the system of regulations and standards is still not complete - other problems include a shortage of inspection instruments, loopholes in the supervision system and inadequate publicity of laws and regulations. The report also calls for study of the potential dangers that may arise from new technologies and food production and processing methods, as also calls on the country to improve its capability to check and assess food safety risks.
