Hubei Shendan Healthy Food Co, China's largest producer of egg products, has filed an official complaint with CNN that requires the U.S. TV network to apologize for listing pi dan, a traditional Chinese dish, as the "most disgusting food" in the world, Shanghai Daily reported.

CNN described the Pi Dan as looking strange and having a poor taste, which has sparked off an angry debate in China. The complaint, filed on Monday on behalf of Liu Huaqiao, chairman of Shendan, as well as its 3,000 employees, was the latest in a series of civilian efforts aimed to defend the popular Chinese dish, which is hundreds of years old.

"CNN's report, based on evaluations made by those who are even not consumers of pi dan, was obviously conducted in an unscientific way," Shendan said in a letter. "The conclusion it has come up with only proved its ignorance and arrogance, as well as a complete lack of respect for cultural traditions in other countries."

The dish is made by preserving eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, lime and rice hulls.

The letter said pi dan reduces cholesterol in fresh eggs by more than 20 percent and causes protein and fat to be better absorbed into the body.
