3 injured after hotel elevator plunges in south China city

Three people were injured including one seriously, when a hotel elevator plunged on Monday evening in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, local authorities said Wednesday.

At 8 p.m. Monday evening, an elevator of the Jinhu Hotel plunged from the eighth floor to the ground floor, said an authority with the government of Huadu District of Guangzhou, where the hotel is located.

The seriously injured, a 17-year-old boy, had a broken rib that had penetrated his lung. He was still in critical condition as of Wednesday evening.

Fourteen people were in the elevator, designed to hold 10 people at the most, said Li Yanhui, deputy manager with the hotel.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
