The body of a monk who died after setting himself on fire Monday in a Tibetan community in southwest China's Sichuan Province was cremated Wednesday in accordance with Tibetan rituals, the local government said.

Family members of Tsongwon Norbu, 29, and fellow monks from Nyitso Monastery in Dawu County of Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, attended his funeral, which was held early Wednesday morning, the county government said in a press release.

Tsongwon Norbu, a monk at Nyitso Monastery, died Monday afternoon after setting himself on fire.

"His self-immolation was an individual act and ran counter to the commandments of Tibetan Buddhism," the document quoted unnamed sources from the monastery as saying.
