Household appliances in hundreds of houses and shops in Chongqing exploded Sunday afternoon as two electricians were repairing the electric box, the Chongqing Commercial Daily reported.

Frightened residents at 91 and 93 Yubei Rd., Shapingba, Chongqing City, fled from the buildings into the street. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, a customer service representative from the Chongqing Electric Power Corp.

said. Mr. Lin, the owner of an internet cafe on the second floor of one of the buildings, said nearly half of his computers automatically powered off due to low voltage yesterday afternoon.

He called for help, and shortly thereafter two electricians arrived and began working on the electrical box behind the bar. After less than 10 minutes, all the computers, screens, lights and other appliances suddenly exploded.

"Fortunately, I had more than 100 customers leave the cafe, and no one was hurt," Lin said.
