A senior legislator has urged the promotion of gender equity in order to encourage more women to participate in political affairs and management.

Chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee and chairwoman of the All-China Women's Federation, made the remarks at a meeting held in Beijing to review a program that promotes research and policies for the development of female workers.

Ten government departments created the program in January 2010 to promote the development of women serving in scientific research, public affairs and other circles.

The program should do more to encourage women to participate in political discussions and advocate gender equity, Chen said.

The program should also strive to promote policies that will help female employees develop their talents and encourage them to be more self-reliant and self-confident, she said.
