Flowers and cards, many of which were signed "brother" or "sister", were laid outside the family shop and at the site of the accident in which a 2-year-old girl died after being run over by two vehicles, at the weekend.

Yue Yue died in hospital in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, on Friday, seven days after the accident.

Many people also expressed their support for the "say no to indifference and awaken true love" campaign, initiated by a local media group, at volunteer stations across Guangzhou.

"I think people should awaken love for others. I hope that people think of it: What if you were injured and nobody helped you," said a woman surnamed Zhong, who memorized Yue Yue at one of the volunteer stations.

Yue Yue's death, and the fact that she was ignored by 18 passers-by as she lay injured, has prompted much soul-searching in the city.

"The case of Yue Yue indicates that there is great room for development in inter-personal help and mutual trust," said a statement from the Guangzhou Youth Volunteer Association.

The 19 teams of the association will introduce a series of programs to promote helping disadvantaged people in the city.

In Nanhai district, Foshan city, where the hardware market is located, the authorities said they would speed up the establishment of social work groups, and push forward the development of help organizations in communities.

Meanwhile, the police have finished the investigation of the two drivers who ran over Yue Yue, including a reconstruction of the accident. The local procuratorate has issued arrest warrants for the drivers, according to Guangzhou Daily.
