Repairs to the Mindroling Monastery kicked off Tuesday in Shannan prefecture in the Tibet autonomous region, marking the launch of the region's 12th five-year plan for cultural relic protection.

The 1,000-year-old monastery is one of 44 cultural relics that will be protected under the plan. The plan calls for the regional government to spend 900 million yuan (about 141.5 million U.S. dollars) to protect the region's cultural relics, with tasks ranging from maintaining existing projects to expanding an exhibition hall in the Tibet Museum, according to Sangpo, director of the regional cultural relics department.

More than 1.4 billion yuan (about 220 million U.S. dollars) has been spent to protect cultural relics in Tibet over the last three decades.
