A total of 2,730 solar-powered TV sets have been sent to herdsmen in Hotan Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, enabling them to have access to TV programs.

The TV sets were donated to those without access to electricity due to the area's high altitude and complicated plateau terrain, according to the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) on Tuesday.

Featuring solar photovoltaics, batteries and satellite receivers, these TV sets can receive 51 TV channels, including 11 ethnic channels and 9 broadcasting channels, at an altitude above 3,500 meters.

Each TV set is about the size of a suitcase and can easily be carried on horseback by herdsmen moving to other pastures, the SARFT said.

Since September, a technical team has been installing and testing the TVs for the herdsmen.
