A mainland spokesperson confirmed Wednesday that two Taiwan residents have been convicted of phone fraud by a court in east China's Anhui Province.

The provincial court delivered the final judgement at the second trial of the case last Friday, said Fan Liqing, spokesperson with the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, at a regular press conference.

The two were sentenced to prison by the court, Fan said without revealing the details of their sentences.

In this case, three persons, two from Taiwan and one from the mainland, were convicted of planning and conducting phone fraud targeting Taiwan residents, Fan said.

They were found to have made more than 2.2 million yuan (346,456 US dollars) through their scams, of which 1.22 million yuan has been confiscated, she said.

The mainland resident was also handed a prison sentence, she said.

The mainland will return the confiscated money to the victims as identified by Taiwan authorities, in accordance with relevant regulations in the judicial cooperation agreement reached by the two sides, she said.

In response to a question about three Taiwan youths charged with robbery in the city of Kunshan in east China's Jiangsu Province, Fan said the case has been taken to court and will be handled according to relevant laws.
