A gunman wanted for the killing of a bank customer in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing earlier this month is not Zeng Kaigui, another armed killer still at large, the Ministry of Public Security has confirmed.
But it said he was the same man who shot dead another six people in six armed robberies in different cities over the past eight years.
Yesterday was the 11th day since the robbery in the capital of Jiangsu Province and one of the most dangerous men in China is still at large. China has said hunting for him was top priority for the country's police.
His identity has not yet been verified. The suspect is around 40 years old, 1.70 to 1.80 meters tall and has tanned skin and splayed feet.
Nanjing police yesterday cordoned off some hills to the northeast of the city and began a blanket search of the area but drew a blank. Residents of Xingwei Village in Qixia District said police in armored vehicles arrived early in the morning and Armed Police officers and SWAT squads with submachine guns and dogs searched the area.
Meanwhile, police in central China's Hubei Province were put on alert after senior officers said they believed the suspect may have sneaked into the province, local media reported.
Shang Wu, deputy director of Hubei's police department, said there was a high possibility the suspect has fled to Hubei. Shang asked every officer in Hubei to be on the alert.
Hubei has put up a reward of 200,000 yuan (US$31,713) in an appeal for information leading to the suspect's arrest. With money offered in other provinces, the total amount on the killer's head is more than 3 million yuan.
The suspect's killing spree began in 2004 when, on April 22, he shot one person dead and injured another during a bank robbery in the southwestern city of Chongqing and escaped with 70,000 yuan. On May 16, 2005, also in Chongqing, he shot and killed two people at another bank and robbed them of 170,000 yuan.
Four incidents were in Changsha in the central Hunan Province. On October 14, 2009, a man died after the suspect fired six shots at him. On December 4, 2009, a man was killed leaving a bank and 45,000 yuan stolen. On October 25, 2010, the suspect killed a man and stole his bag, and on June 28 last year, he shot at a man but ran off after people called for help.
