China's Ministry of Health (MOH) on Sunday issued a letter of congratulation to two scientists who had just won a prominent prize for cancer research.
Earlier last week, Dr. Wang Zhenyi and Dr. Chen Zhu were awarded the 7th Annual Szent-Gyorgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research by the Maryland-based National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) for their "innovative research that led to the successful development of a new therapeutic approach to acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL)."
Echoing the NFCR statement, the MOH letter noted that Wang and Chen had turned one of the most fatal diseases into a highly curable one by combining traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine.
Their achievement demonstrates the medical circle's professionalism and its dedication to science and innovation, read the letter.
It also called on the all the medical workers and researchers to contribute to the country's medical reform, like the two scientists had done, and provide better medical services for the public.
Wang is currently a professor at the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and had once served as the advisor for Chen when he studied for his Master's degree.
Chen currently serves as a China's Minister of Health and is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The Prize is scheduled to be presented at an award ceremony on March 6th in New York.
