The regional legislature of Hong Kong has passed an ordinance to amend a list of "garrison references" in legislation to get rid of terms indicating its colonial history.
The Adaptation of Laws (Military References) Ordinance 2012 detailed 137 adaptions of terms and three amendments to 85 laws, according to a report posted on the website of China's Ministry of National Defense (MOD) on Saturday.
The adaptions replaced the terms referring to the British forces and the monarchy with the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the Central People's Government. The amendments were designed to ensure consistency in quoting concepts relating to the PLA garrison, said the report.
The PLA garrison assumed Hong Kong's defense responsibility on July 1, 1997, which was also the day when the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was founded.
The MOD report highlighted that no material change was made to the provisions of the existing laws, especially in terms of the rights and immunity of the garrison.
The adoption of the ordinance demonstrated the understanding and supports from the Hong Kong community to the PLA garrison, it added.
Introduced by the Hong Kong government in 2010, the ordinance aims to bring military-related references into conformity with the Hong Kong Basic Law and the status of Hong Kong as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, according to a note from the Legislative Council's secretariat.
The ordinance entered into effect on Friday.
