Quake-hit Yushu Tibetan autonomous prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai province put a 110-kilovolt (kv) substation into operation on Monday, aiming to provide stable power for residents and reconstruction projects in the area.
"The new substation makes our life much more convenient. With access to electricity, children can study better at school," said Pema Rigzin from Gyegu county, where the substation is located.
A 7.1-magnitude quake struck Yushu on April 14, 2010, leaving nearly 3,000 dead or missing.
The prefecture's power grid was also severely damaged, and residents in the counties of Yushu, Nangnam and Chindu have endured power shortages ever since.
As part of the reconstruction project, the new substation will provide power supply for the interconnected power grid of the three counties.
Three more 35-kv substations and related power lines will be successively put into use in early March.
During the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), the local government plans to build a 330-kv electric grid network and connect it to the state's power grid, in order to tackle the area's long-time power shortage.
