A senior official has vowed the Chinese mainland will work to protect the legal rights of Taiwanese business people in civil lawsuits.

Courts will improve their cooperation with Taiwan affairs departments to better handle lawsuits involving Taiwanese people, said Zheng Lizhong, deputy director of the Taiwan Work Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, at a meeting held in north China's Tianjin Municipality on Thursday.

As economic cooperation and personnel exchanges have expanded across the Taiwan Strait in recent years, more civil lawsuits have involved parties from Taiwan, raising challenges to the courts' work, Zheng noted.

Efforts should be made to improve understanding of cross-Strait cases and their impact on cross-Strait relations, he said.

The official suggested judges work with local organizations of Taiwanese business people to promote awareness of mainland laws and avoid unnecessary lawsuits.

Wan Exiang, vice president of the supreme court, said at the same meeting that the courts and the government's Taiwan affairs offices should set up an effective coordination mechanism so as to help settle disputes in civil cases.

Judges from several provincial courts and officials from Taiwan affairs offices under provincial governments attended the meeting.
