Two women were killed and one injured when a bus hit them after running into a sidewalk in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang province at noon on Wednesday, local traffic police have announced.

One woman died immediately, and another after treatment failed. The injured woman is receiving treatment in hospital in Harbin, according to the municipal traffic police.

Initial investigation shows that bus, serving the city's no.118 route, ran a red light immediately before the crash at around 12:30 p.m., traffic police said.

They added that further investigation is needed to determine if there were any other safety violations concerning the vehicle.
